From Graduate to
Engineer at Harlyn Solutions

Joining at the Beginning

When Jack Coulson joined Harlyn in 2021 as the company’s first graduate engineer, the business itself was still taking shape. A recent Master of Engineering graduate from Newcastle University, Jack stepped into a small, ambitious team that was defining its identity as much as its technical capabilities.

From day one, he was immersed not just in engineering work but in the culture that would come to define Harlyn—fast-paced, collaborative, and built on ownership. What began as a graduate placement quickly evolved into a formative role in shaping the company’s future direction.

Jack’s early projects saw him swap university lectures for hands-on engineering design and on-site delivery. Whether preparing lift plans, coordinating vessel operations, or reviewing design drawings, he was learning by doing—absorbing the detail, the responsibility, and the rhythm of real-world engineering.

Project Engineer: Delivering 2 x 1500-Tonne Topside OSPs

Three years after joining Harlyn, Jack took on one of the company’s largest and most complex projects to date: the delivery of two 1500-tonne offshore substation platforms (OSPs) from the River Tyne to Nigg.

As Project Engineer, he was responsible for a wide scope of engineering and operational deliverables—tow manuals, cutting and welding procedures, bollard pull calculations, and coordination across multiple contractors and suppliers. The project required seamless integration between design, logistics, and marine operations, with no room for error.

Jack approached the challenge with the same precision and calm focus that had earned him trust across the team. His ability to translate technical detail into clear operational plans proved invaluable. The successful delivery of both OSPs was a milestone for Harlyn—demonstrating not only the company’s growing capabilities but also Jack’s evolution from graduate to dependable project lead.

Engineering Depth and Operational Reach

Beyond the OSP project, Jack has contributed to a wide portfolio of technically demanding operations:

• HS2 Project: Designed and engineered a temporary floating roadway using modular Linkflote pontoons.
• Hinkley Point C: Produced transport operations and lift plans for multiple tandem lifts using craned vessels.
• USA Operations: Oversaw jacking, trailer movements, and assembly of a 126-tonne pre-lay plough for subsea boulder clearance.
• Structural and Stability Design: Delivered detailed analyses for cable baskets, lifting frames, and sea fastenings—supporting heavy-lift operations across multiple sectors.
• Port Captaincy: Acted as Site Project Engineer for numerous international loadouts, ensuring safe, compliant execution in ports across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.

Each project reinforced his technical breadth—from hydrodynamic stability assessments to heavy-lift planning—while strengthening his leadership in multi-disciplinary environments.

Becoming a Mentor and a Leader

Now a senior member of the Harlyn engineering team, Jack’s role has evolved. With new graduates joining each year, he has become both a mentor and role model, guiding others through the same transition he once made.

Whether it’s walking a graduate through a lift plan, reviewing structural designs, or sharing lessons from offshore operations, Jack is helping to embed the standards and culture that have defined Harlyn since its earliest days. His leadership is measured not only by the projects he delivers but by the people he helps develop.

A Global Perspective

Jack’s work has taken him across the world—from project sites in the United States to operations in mainland Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Far East. Each experience has broadened his understanding of international operations and client engagement. His professionalism and technical clarity have made him a trusted representative of Harlyn to its global client base, reinforcing the company’s reputation for precision and reliability.

Looking Forward

Jack’s journey mirrors Harlyn’s own growth—from a small, determined start-up to a company delivering major offshore and infrastructure projects worldwide.

He has played a pivotal role in that evolution: helping to build the foundations, shaping the graduate pathway, and proving through his work what a Harlyn engineer stands for—technical excellence, integrity, and commitment to delivery.

From his first days in the office to leading one of the company’s largest projects, Jack has demonstrated how opportunity and capability can drive both personal and organisational success. His story is not just one of professional growth, but of contribution—helping turn a young company’s vision into reality, and setting the standard for the engineers who will follow.
