6 Months
In Harlyn

Six Months. Five Countries. Big Project.
When Ollie joined Harlyn for a six-month placement from the University of Edinburgh, he was looking for hands-on engineering experience in an exciting new environment. What he found was the opportunity to work across five countries, take on real responsibility from day one, and contribute to Harlyn’s largest project to date.
Working on the our biggest project to date, engineering a shallow water cable lay project, Ollie designed and delivered critical mechanical components, supported mobilisation on site, and later joined the barge offshore as a Project Engineer. During his placement, Ollie worked across five countries and contributed to our largest project to date. From designing cable tray layouts to visiting suppliers and projects across the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Lithuania.
A defining moment of Ollie’s placement saw him travel to Lithuania as Harlyn’s sole representative, where he worked alongside a key supplier to overcome production delays and ensure the timely deliver of a critical mooring line – demonstrating – a level of trust rarely placed in placement students.
Reflecting on his placement, Ollie:
“No two weeks were ever the same. I’ve learned more in six months than I ever expected, been trusted with real responsibility, and had opportunities I know are genuinely unique. It’s been an incredible experience, and I’m hugely grateful to everyone at Harlyn for helping me develop as an engineer.”
